Industrial Relations in HRM

                                                        Figure 1: Industrial relations

Labor relations, organizational behavior, and human resource management are all included in the field of industrial relations; HRM places a particular emphasis on the interaction of employees, organizations, and the government. The main goal of HRM in labor relations is to foster an atmosphere where businesses may prosper while giving employees chances to develop. According to statistics on labor relations, the percentage of confrontations at work has increased to 54.2% during the last ten years. Disputes between employees themselves are next in frequency to disputes between management and employees. The phrase "industrial relationship" refers to both the interaction between labor and management and the relationship between employees and employers. Although the definition of industrial relations has changed over time, it has always included elements like pay, benefits, working conditions, job security, and other employment terms that have an impact on workers' welfare. The current concept of industrial relations in human resource management entails looking at the labor-management issue in connection to both organizational success and human resource planning (UNext, 2022).

Importance of Industrial Relations

  • ·         Uninterrupted production

The continuance of production is the primary advantage of industrial relations. This implies that everyone, from managers to employees, will remain employed. The resources are used to their fullest extent, resulting in the highest level of production. Everybody receives a consistent income flow. For various other industries, including those where the products are intermediates or inputs, exporters where the products are commodities for export, and consumers and workers where the products are items for mass consumption, the smooth operation of one sector is crucial.

  • ·         Reduction in Industrial Disputes

Industrial conflicts are reduced through positive workplace interactions. Conflicts are a manifestation of the inability of fundamental human drives or impulses to find enough fulfillment or expression, which is completely remedied by positive workplace relationships. Some of the characteristics of industrial discontent that do not appear in an environment of industrial peace are strikes, lockouts, go-slow tactics, and complaints. It boosts output and encourages collaboration.

  • ·         High morale

Employee morale increases when there are positive workplace relationships. Employees work very hard because they believe that increasing productivity is in both the employer's and their own best interests. Every employee believes he shares in the profits of the business. The businessman must also understand that the benefits of the industry are not only for him but should be freely distributed to all of his employees. In other words, the essential accomplishment of industrial peace is total unity of thought and action. It elevates workers' status in society and satisfies their egos. Because strong cooperative efforts alone might provide fantastic outcomes, they inevitably influence output.

  • ·         Mental Revolution

The main objective of industrial relations is to completely transform both employees' and workers' minds. The key to achieving industrial peace is for both parties to change their perspectives. Working out a new partnership that embodies the principles of real democracy is the responsibility of leadership among the ranks of the workforce, employees, and government. The importance of employees in such a collaboration should be acknowledged, and both parties should see themselves as partners in the sector. Workers, on the other hand, must respect the authority of their employers. Due to the fact that they are aware of one another's interests, it will inevitably have an effect on productivity.

  • ·         Reduced Wastage

Cooperation and mutual respect are the cornerstones of healthy workplace relationships. It will contribute to higher output. The national interest is safeguarded by minimizing the waste of labor, resources, and machinery. Therefore, it is clear that having positive working relationships is the cornerstone of increased production at lower costs and higher profits. As a result, workers are more productive. To improve employee welfare and boost workplace morale, new and innovative projects may be launched. Only in an environment of industrial peace can an economy be efficiently structured for planned production and distribution, aimed at the attainment of social justice and mass welfare (What is human resource, 2023).

Objectives of Industrial Relation

  • ·         To establish industrial peace.
  • ·         To safeguard the interests of both workers and management.
  • ·         To avoid industrial disputes.
  • ·         To raise the production capacity.
  • ·         To establish industrial democracy.
  • ·         To minimize the labour turnover rate and absenteeism.
  • ·         To safeguard the workers economic and social interests.
  • ·         To contribute to the economic development of the country through productivity.
  • ·         To establish a full employment situation.
  • ·         To minimize strikes, lockout, Heroes, etc., by providing good working conditions and fair wages to the workers (Vedantu, 2023).

Conclusion

The interaction between employees and employers is referred to as "industrial relations." It is categorized into three categories: ethical, problem solving and science building, and is sometimes referred to as employment relations. An industrial dispute where one side engages in labor action may originate from a violation of industrial relations. The study of industrial relations looks at the interaction between labor (workers) and management (the employer), as well as the governments, establishments, and groups that either directly or indirectly control the system.
